Do you have any clothing suggestions?

Whether we are photographing a single child, multiple children or a family, selecting the proper clothing is essential to obtain a successful portrait. It is the difference between a snap shot and a beautiful work of art for your home or office.

Dress in simple, classic clothing. If the session involves multiple subjects in the portrait, you will want to coordinate the clothing colors and styles. You want to blend the bodies of everyone in the photograph so that the faces stand out. The goal is to harmonize the members in the group.

Consider the style of portraits you desire, whether formal or casual and dress accordingly. You may also consider where in your house or office the portrait might hang and coordinate according to the room, as you would a print or a piece of artwork.

Key things to remember when picking out clothing:

• Tone down the colors. Bright colors attract attention away from the face.
• Dark colors slenderize, lighter colors seem to add a little weight to the bodies.
• Make sure the selections coordinate for all persons in the photograph. It is also strongly suggested that the clothing coordinate with the season and background. For example, you may not want to wear white in a Fall portrait as the contrast is too harsh. White and pastels would be for Spring & Summer.
• Some examples of clothing would be: khaki & denim, black & denim, navy & khaki, khaki & white, or black & white. A combination of pastel colors, or a combination of warm tones (browns, tans and greens) also make for a nice photograph.
• Your portraits are meant to be enjoyed for years to come. Fad-Clothing should be avoided unless you plan on having a portrait made annually.
